Small Businesses: The Engine of the American Economy
Small businesses have always played an important role in America's economic success. They create jobs, bring new ideas to market and help communities thrive. Many of the country's most successful companies started with an entrepreneur who had an idea, took a risk and worked hard to turn that vision into a business.
According to the U.S. Small Business Administration's 2026 statistics, America's 36.2 million small businesses account for 99.9 percent of all U.S. businesses and employ approximately 62.3 million people, representing 45.9 percent of the nation's private-sector workforce.
Those numbers are impressive, but what matters just as much is the opportunity behind them. Every growing business has the potential to create jobs, support families and contribute to the communities it serves.
Yet for many small businesses, particularly those trying to enter new markets or secure larger contracts, getting a foot in the door remains one of the biggest challenges.
Supplier Inclusion Makes Good Business Sense
I have always believed that good ideas and strong capabilities are not limited to large companies. Some of the most capable businesses are smaller firms that simply haven't had the opportunity to demonstrate what they can do.
As a business owner, I understand how challenging it can be to establish credibility, build relationships and compete for opportunities when larger, more established companies already have a seat at the table.
This is why supplier inclusion matters.
When corporations and government agencies expand their supplier networks to include qualified small businesses, they gain access to new perspectives, specialized expertise and partners who are often able to respond quickly and adapt to changing needs.
It's not about lowering standards or awarding contracts simply because a company is small. It's about making sure capable businesses have a fair chance to compete and earn opportunities based on the value they bring.

When we open more doors for capable small businesses, we aren't just helping individual companies succeed. We're investing in the future of American business.
And when those partnerships work, everyone benefits. Organizations gain strong suppliers, smaller firms have room to grow and the broader economy becomes more competitive.
Removing Barriers and Opening Doors
Of course, creating these opportunities is easier said than done.
Small businesses often face significant hurdles, from navigating complicated procurement processes to securing financing and meeting the requirements of larger contracts. Even identifying the right opportunities and connecting with decision makers can require considerable time and resources.
I've seen how much effort goes into preparing a business to compete for contracts, often long before there is any guarantee of winning the work. For a smaller company, those investments can be substantial.
Through my experience leading Lucid Consulting Group and working with large enterprise organizations, I've seen how access to the right opportunity can transform a small business. Equally important, I've seen how smaller firms can deliver the expertise, responsiveness and accountability that organizations need to achieve meaningful results.
There are practical ways to make the process more accessible. Clearer procurement requirements, greater visibility into upcoming opportunities and stronger partnerships between large and small businesses can make a meaningful difference.
Consulting firms also play an important role in making supplier inclusion more effective. By helping organizations identify qualified suppliers, streamline procurement processes and build productive partnerships, consultants can turn supplier inclusion objectives into measurable business outcomes. At the same time, they can help smaller businesses strengthen their operations, improve competitiveness and prepare for sustainable growth.
What matters most is creating an environment where businesses have a genuine opportunity to succeed based on their capabilities and performance.
A Stronger Future for American Business
I am optimistic about the future of small businesses in America. Technology is making it easier for entrepreneurs to reach new customers, build more efficient operations and compete in markets that may once have been out of reach.
At the same time, companies are recognizing the value of having a broader network of trusted suppliers rather than relying on the same established providers.
I believe this creates a real opportunity to rethink how businesses work together.
Supplier inclusion should be embedded in how organizations approach procurement and build strategic partnerships. By broadening access to qualified suppliers, businesses can encourage innovation, strengthen competition and create lasting economic value.
For small businesses, a single opportunity can be a turning point. It can provide the foundation to hire additional employees, expand services, invest in new capabilities or enter an entirely new market.
And those successes don't happen in isolation. They create momentum that reaches employees, families, other businesses and local communities.
The future of American business will be shaped not only by the companies that lead today, but also by those given the opportunity to compete tomorrow. By creating pathways for qualified small businesses to demonstrate their value, we strengthen competition, expand economic opportunity and build a more resilient American economy.
When Outsourced Consulting Must Carry the Work Through
Outsourced consulting becomes expensive when the provider leaves the client to translate advice into execution. A polished recommendation can still create internal drag when the business context is thin or ownership is unclear, especially when changing priorities force internal teams to rebuild the work after handoff. The practical buying tension is not simply expertise versus price. Executives need a partner that can understand why the engagement exists and carry responsibility far enough into delivery. It must also adjust when conditions change without turning every shift into a new consulting exercise.
Context depth deserves scrutiny because many engagements begin with a request that describes the symptom rather than the underlying business problem. A credible provider should test the stated scope against objectives, constraints, dependencies and success measures before prescribing an approach. That reduces the risk of solving the engagement on paper while leaving the decision or process behind it untouched. Buyers should also examine whether consultants understand how their work connects to the broader business, rather than treating a financial model or program plan as an isolated deliverable.
Procurement should test how that understanding becomes an engagement design. Scope boundaries need enough precision to prevent fee drift, but excessive rigidity can make the contract obsolete when business conditions move. Buyers should look at how decisions are escalated, how resource changes are handled, how progress is documented and how success is measured. Those mechanics reveal whether the firm can absorb normal enterprise change without shifting coordination back to the client.
Execution discipline separates advisory capacity from useful delivery. Milestones, owners, dependencies and measures should be explicit enough that stalled work becomes visible early. Reporting has value only when it supports decisions and prompts corrective action. An outsourced partner should be willing to raise risks before they cause delays and challenge assumptions when evidence changes. Staying involved through implementation matters as well. The point is not to add management overhead. It is to reduce the follow-up that the client must perform to keep the engagement moving.
“Lucid Consulting Group’s 360 Agility approach allows teams and engagement models to change as priorities shift while keeping outcomes visible.”
Rigid engagement models age quickly inside complex organizations. Budgets and priorities can shift while the underlying business objective remains intact, which makes adaptability a real buying requirement. Providers should be able to adjust staffing and workstreams without losing accountability. A provider that changes headcount but not decision routines can appear flexible while creating more coordination. A provider’s ability to work across functions matters for the same reason. Problems that begin in one function often pull in adjacent areas such as finance, data, technology and process design. A broad enough skill set can reduce handoffs, but only if one team retains clear responsibility for the result.
Lucid Consulting Group builds engagements around defined outcomes, ownership, milestones and decision points, then stays involved through implementation rather than stopping at recommendations. Its consultants are trained to understand the business behind an engagement and move work forward rather than simply report on it. Its 360 Agility approach allows teams and engagement models to change as priorities shift while keeping outcomes visible. The firm also works across program management, finance, data and technology, giving it room to address connected business problems without immediately handing work elsewhere. For executives buying outsourced business consulting where implementation, ownership and adaptable delivery matter, Lucid Consulting Group warrants close consideration.
