Marcelo Dadone, Managing Partner The current macroeconomic landscape in the United States presents a highly complex, opaque, and polarized environment for foreign small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) seeking market expansion. A volatile combination of subdued growth, persistent inflation, aggressive protectionist trade policies, and elevated domestic energy costs—compounded by ongoing geopolitical conflicts and escalating disputes with our traditional international trading partners—has introduced unprecedented strategic ambiguity for foreign investors.

Marcelo Dadone, Managing PartnerWhile large multinational corporations possess the capital required to onshore production assets and bypass costly tariffs, this capital-intensive pivot remains unfeasible for liquidity-constrained SMBs. Cross-border expansion strategies across both tiers have largely shifted away from the traditional "carrot-and-stick" dynamic (where local reinvestment shielded firms from high tariffs) toward a highly cautious "wait-and-see" approach.
Strategic Importance of LatAm SMBs for the U.S.
This strategic freeze is deeply felt across Latin America. SMBs serve as vital conduits for outbound investment into the United States and traditionally drive a significant transfer of productive foreign capital, introduce innovative products and technologies, and act as meaningful engines for local job creation.
Lacking massive capital surpluses, these enterprises depend heavily on the financial health of their core domestic markets. However, amidst prolonged global stagnation and heightened uncertainty, Latin America's primary economic engines are facing distinct structural headwinds. Brazil and Mexico remain stuck in a low-growth plateau, Colombia is undergoing a slow stabilization phase, and Argentina balances in a highly fragile fiscal equilibrium. A few nations are leveraging sector-specific specializations, like Chile (steady mining and tech), Costa Rica’s (high-tech manufacturing), Peru’s (mining and vegetables), and Panama’s (logistics hub).

For most Latin SMBs, unstable local core operations, erratic U.S. trade policies, and shifting global dynamics are pushing them to postpone their cross-border initiatives.

Domestic Hurdles, Regulatory Barriers and Escalating Operational Costs
Beyond these factors, several localized constraints are further complicating U.S. market entry for small and medium-sized enterprises, like tightening investment visa eligibility requirements, broader regulatory enforcement on immigrants, skyrocketing leases on commercial real estate, higher expenditures required build out industrial facilities and elevated labor rates.
Adapting to Uncertainty: Scalable Digital Sectors and Product Specialization
Faced with these hard challenges, inbound Latin American SMB investment is transitioning towards transnational e-commerce, digital marketing and creative services, professional services, B2B consulting, AI-enabled logistics, and specialized Food & Beverage distribution.
